How has Covid-19 affected you?

COVID-19 has affected a lot of people in various ways, both good and bad.

“COVID-19 affected me in a negative way because I missed out on a lot of things I had expected to happen my junior year,’” Allison Frye said.

Allison’s brother, Mathew Frye, disagrees with her.

“It affected me in a good way by spending more time with my family,” Mathew Frye said.

Either way, many students can all admit that this pandemic will be one they will never forget.

Before the pandemic hit last spring, many people did not realize that they were taking many things for granted: visiting friends and family members, hugging loved ones, going outside without a mask, etc.

“It [the pandemic] has given me much more appreciation on the view of my life and how lucky I am. It really showed me not to take simple things for granted,” says Jayden Sharps.

One negative most students tend to agree on is that their sleeping schedules have been disrupted. Having to follow a color map (WVDHHR) every day and going only two days a week caused many students to stay up late.

“One of the main reasons that COVID-19 affected me in a bad way was that my sleep schedule became completely terrible. I was going to bed at 9 am and waking up at 9 pm,” Michael Clay said.

Some people think it all isn’t that bad besides just wearing a mask and keeping distant from everybody.

“I honestly can’t think of anything bad about me individually, but it has made my job more difficult because of the COVID-19 precautions and not having students in the building for most of the year,” said Jacob Messer, Scott High School principal

But for student-athletes, they say it has been horrendous. For some athletes, a season has been delayed or entirely canceled. Jayden Sharps said,

“The negatives of COVID-19 are having sports delayed, and not being able to see my friends.”

This includes events for the school as well. Allison Frye discussed the issue:

“I missed homecoming week and the Valentine’s dance. I didn’t get a vacation this year, and I missed seeing my friends so often. In cheerleading this year, we didn’t compete and we still are not allowed to stunt.”

Although the pandemic has been awful, there are some positives. It has been a wakeup call to get some people to exercise or work out.

“I have lost ninety pounds so that’s been a great for my health,” said Mr. Messer.

Some people mentioned they also met new people through playing video games and taking on a new job.

“Whenever COVID-19 first hit and everyone was quarantined, I was able to make a lot of new friends by playing video games. I built those friendships up to where I still talk to those people today.” – Michael Clay

You know the saying, “New year, New Me!”? Well, Mr. Messer had that feeling during the pandemic, and not just from his incredible ninety-pound loss. While students were not in the building, the custodial staff worked tirelessly to spruce up the school with fresh paint.

“It [the pandemic] has allowed us to paint the whole entire school and made it the best has been in years,” said Mr. Messer.
