Heartstopper – Review
Heartstopper is a novel series by Alice Olsen that was turned into a netflix show. This novel and show covers the struggles of people in the lgbtq community, mental health, toxic relationships, bullying, and even eating disorders.Heartstopper is a super cute and entertaining show; watching the chemistry between Nick and Charlie grow throughout the two seasons from just being friends to Nick’s journey of finding out he may be bisexual to Nick and Charlie being more than just friends. I like that they showed Nick’s journey of him figuring himself out because, the people that are confused will see it and find comfort in it while also seeing that they are not alone and that it is okay to be confused. In the show it is slightly covered that one of Charlie’s friend Elle who is a transgender woman, who had attended an all boys school, was bullied after her transitioning and coming out, I wish that they covered this more and explained or even showed what exactly the bullies did or said to her like they did with Charlie. They showed flashbacks of Charlie being bullied in the Boy’s locker room due to being gay, they had said cruel words to him.

This show is something I will always be looking forward to with future seasons and will always be coming back for more, I really enjoyed this show. It pulls on your heartstrings and can even make one cry a bit. There were many times I was laughing, rolling my eyes, and crying. One of the laughing moments was when Charlie’s friend Toa stood up for him when one of the boys was making fun of him and in the process Toa made a “your mom” joke towards Harry; one of Charlie’s bullies and one of Nick’s old friend. A time I was rolling my eyes was when Ben Hope; Charlie’s ex who treated him badly, tried making excuses as to why he treated Charlie badly. When Nick came out to his mom in the show I cried a little bit. When Charlie and Nick was at the beach Nick picked up Charlie saying “We are Boyfriends” repeatedly had me in awe and pulled my heartstrings.
I am glad that this show covered eating disorders because it is a serious topic that needs to be talked about because many people struggle with it. Nick was noticing that Charlie was not really eating when he was over at his house or together so, Nick did some research and found out that he may have an eating disorder but he does not bring this up with Charlie. I kinda wish he had done so but I get that it was a strong topic to bring up. Later on Charlie ends up passing out when on a school field trip to Paris due to not eating which led to Nick finally confronting Charlie about his eating disorder after he was well.
