First Competition for Boone County’s Finest

Scott High School Band traveled to Huntington High School to perform and compete in the Thunder on The Hill Competition on Saturday, September 12th. Band members have mentioned how excited they were but also nervous.

“We’re so excited!” band member Josie Green said. “I think we will perform great, especially for maybe the first and second movements.”

One member said the competitions are their favorite part of the band but didn’t think they would win. The band has dropped in size over the past few years because of conflicts. Now there are around seventy members in the band.

“What are competitions like? Two-hour-long bus rides, and we get there and hang out,” band member Maximus Mills said. “Like, at our peak, a couple years ago the band was like a hundred people, which was fun but against Capitol we had no chance at winning.”

With the band shrinking, it might continue to the point that Scott High School might not be able to compete. Members urge people to join. Mills and Green expressed that the band could be larger and better.

“Put this in the paper; we better get some more students,” Mills said. “Tell people band is fun, and it’s not as bad as it used to be.”

Members say Scott High School has some competitive opponents. They get judged on everything separately and together. Scott is not as well known as the other schools, but they won one competition last year.

“Lincoln County is in our class,” band member Brialan Dolin said. “I think either Lincoln County or Woodrow Wilson is our biggest competition.”

The Scott Skyhawks band worked hard to get their show ready. Completing all four movements, they have practiced hard and have a lot of passion.

“Tomorrow we will get on the bus and try our best to bring something home.” Dolin said, “I know we will play our best and work hard, but the whole point is to have fun and enjoy it.”
