Teacher Feature – Ed Smith
Mr. Edward Smith is a geography and contemporary studies teacher at Scott High School.
If Smith could take his students anywhere in the world, he would take them to France.
“I actually wanted to take them to Normandy… it was just in time for the 75th anniversary of storming the beaches of Normandy,” Smith said.
Smith said he worries it might be a little far-fetched.
“So, I went through EF Educational Tours, I believe… even though we had a lot of kids wanting to go, it was a little bit too pricey,” Smith said.
Smith said he was a big fan of fantasy sports.
“I am a big nerd. I like fantasy football a lot. I do a simulation hockey league,” Smith said.
He said that he really enjoys scary movies.
“I’m a big horror movie fan, so I do watch a lot of horror movies,” Smith said.
Smith said his favorite part about teaching are the students.
“The best thing is the students, and the worst thing is the students, right?” Smith said. “Really, the best thing about is you guys, being able to have a conversation with you guys, seeing the aha moments that you guys get.”
Smith said he has always loved history.
“One day, I was like, man I kind of want to do teaching history,” Smith said.
Smith said he encourages his students to take chances.
“The one thing I always tell them, I tell them this, always do something out of your comfort zone,” Smith said. “When you are the most uncomfortable is when you become the most prepared about things.”
Smith said he has participated in sports when he was younger.
“So, I played football, basketball, baseball, I ran a little track. I was in roller hockey league,” Smith said.
For years now, Smith has coached the teachers’ Powderpuff team.
