Teacher Feature – Regina Ramey

Mrs. Regina Ramey is a high school math teacher here at Scott High School.

Mrs. Ramey says one of her favorite things she looks forward to every year at Scott is the new students that she will be able to have in her classes and teach. She also enjoys getting to reconnect with students that she has before.

Mrs. Ramey found her teaching job from an interest test that they had at the college. When the test results came back it said teacher. She said she knew she had always loved math and that she wouldn’t mind grading papers, so she decided to become a math teacher.

Mrs. Ramey went to Sharples High School which is now closed, and then continued her education at West Virginia University. After two years at WVU, Mrs. Ramey would find out that she would not be able to keep affording schooling there. So, after she left WVU she returned home for a while and then went back to college at West Virginia State University to finish up her college degree. First, at WVU, she thought to herself that she wanted to be an Engineer, so she was taking engineering classes. While taking those classes, she wanted to be an aerospace engineer but soon found out that to do this, she would have to move to Florida for this job. She figured that she would try to do industrial engineering instead. Ramey says that after a year of back and forth, something had to change.

“I don’t like this, I don’t want to do this for the rest of my life,” Ramey said, quoting herself at that time.

Ramey said her favorite thing about teaching is to be around kids and educate them as much as possible and teach them everything about math that she knows. She said she thinks that the benefits of being a teacher is that she gets the summers off and she also gets to interact with the children.

She said her favorite thing about being a math teacher in particular is that everything in math is all about steps and algorisms instead of different histories and other things, there isn’t any grey areas, you just follow the steps and you find your solution. Mrs. Ramey says that she has no care for the money, she really loves to teach and educate her students.

Mrs. Ramey has been teaching here at Scott High School for 19 going on 20 years.

Mrs. Ramey also enjoys watching the Mountaineers play football and other sports. She loves to cheer on her school and be a proud alumni member.

After school hours, she said she loves to code, read different types of books, and play The Sims, Sims 3 in particular.
