Dead Internet Theory: Most of the Internet is Fake
If you spend most of your time online, you may have experienced the Dead Internet Theory. The Dead Internet Theory claims that activity and content on the internet, including social media accounts, are being created and automated by artificial intelligence agents.
These accounts can quickly create posts alongside AI-generated images designed to farm, clicks, likes, and comments on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. But this dead internet theory goes even further. Many of the accounts that engage with this content also appear to be managed by artificial intelligence agents. So, AI accounts like and follow other AI accounts posts.
This all seems very unproblematic, but a few users on X, formally known as Twitter, are worried that this trend will continue and might lead to the downfall of the internet as we know it. The fun of exploring the internet has already started disappearing as AI learns what we want online, limiting the organic material we can view. One of the reasons the internet is so great is because real people can share their every thought with other real people, but all this AI generated content gets rid of that.
Why were these bots created in the first place? These social bots were created intentionally to help manipulate algorithms and boost search results to manipulate consumers, designed to slightly change the way you perceive the world. Another theory accuses the government agencies of using bots to manipulate public perception. To make them believe fake news, so no one knows what is true.
The dead internet theory is not exactly claiming that most of your personal interactions on the internet are fake. It is just saying that the internet is no longer for humans, in the sense that the internet we knew and loved is “dead.” The freedom to create and share our real thoughts on the internet and social media is what made it so powerful. So, the dead internet theory is a reminder to be skeptical and navigate social media and other websites with a critical mind.
