Boone County Wins Big at SkillsUSA

SkillsUSA is a state and national competition for students that go to technical college or vocational school.

In the competition, students compete with different schools in many different events. These sections and challenges are decided by what course you take, whether it is health science, cosmetology, automotive, power sports, electrical, welding, etc. If you achieve first place at the state level, you have the chance to go on and compete at the national level.

Kennedy Hall, a junior at Scott High School, recently attended the West Virginia SkillsUSA leadership competition.

“I competed in the health knowledge bowl with Mackenna Queen, Carlee Pettry, and Will Toler, where we placed second in the state of West Virginia,” Hall said.

The Boone Career and Technical Center had eleven students to finish first place and earn gold medals in seven individual or team competitions. There were eighteen students that finished second and earned silver medals. Also, there were 12 students who won third place.

Hall said she appreciated the chance to attend SkillsUSA, and she really enjoyed the event.

“I had a very cool experience at Skills and thought of it was the perfect opportunity to show what we have been learning throughout the year at VOCA,” Hall said.
